The Ultimate Guide to Choosing a Wooden Bathroom Vanity Unit

Creating your bathroom sanctuary takes careful planning, and few elements carry as much weight aesthetically as the vanity unit. In recent years, the shift away from mass produced, moisture-sensitive MDF toward sustainable, handcrafted wooden vanity units has transformed how we think about bathroom furniture.

Material Matters

The soul of a wooden vanity lies in its grain and its history. At Still & Bloom, we prioritise the character and sustainability found in high quality reclaimed timber.

  • Reclaimed wood offers...

    Character & History

Reclaimed wood offers a storied texture, with natural knots and grain patterns that "new" or mass produced timber simply cannot replicate.

    Stability

    • as reclaimed timber has already aged and "settled" over time, it is often more stable than new wood, making it an ideal choice for the shifting temperatures of a bathroom.

Choosing a Design for Your Space

"The shape and size of your vanity unity or washstand contributes to the flow of your bathroom."

  • The Contemporary Design

  • The Traditional Choice

  • The Rustic Minimalist Look

If you are aiming for an airy, reassuringly contemporary style, a unit with splayed legs is a perfect choice. The Splay Wooden Vanity Unit is designed to lift the furniture off the floor, creating the illusion of more space in smaller bathrooms while its’ solid construction provides a rock-solid foundation for basins.

For a more rustic or warm feel, look for tapered legs and classic proportions. The French Console Vanity brings a touch of farmhouse elegance that pairs beautifully with traditional cross-head taps and ceramic basins.

For those who prefer a "less is more" approach, our popular V-Back Console offers clean lines that showcase the wood grain without any visual clutter.

Moisture; Is Wood Safe to Use In Bathrooms?

The most common concern we hear is: "Will the wood warp or rot?" The answer lies in the craftsmanship. A high-quality wooden bathroom vanity unit must be treated with professional-grade, moisture-resistant sealants

At Still & Bloom, we use a multi-stage finishing process that allows the wood to maintain its natural feel while ensuring water beads off the surface. Combined with periodic top ups using clear furniture wax (every 6 months or so), your bathroom vanity unit will endure the tests of time. View the Still and Bloom wood care guide here.

Sizing and Installation

Before ordering, consider your plumbing. Unlike mass-market units with thin backboards, our solid wood units are built to last.

  • Plumbing access:
Ensure you have space behind drawers or within the console for your waste trap.

  • Basin choice:
Whether you choose a countertop "sit-on" basin or a semi-recessed style, ensure your vanity height is comfortable (usually around 800mm-850mm including the basin).

  • Check sizes:
Check you have the space to move around your vanity, room to install your sink and accommodate the faucet.

Handmade to Standard or Custom Sizes

Investing in a handcrafted unit means choosing furniture that ages with grace. Whether it's the vintage charm of the French Console or the sharp lines of the Splay unit, your vanity is the anchor of your bathroom’s identity.

At Still and Bloom we know that 1cm can make the difference in a perfectly fitted bathroom. That’s why we offer our custom size service.
